I think that the sparse tools in octave-forge are currently un-maintained because sparse was merged into the 2.9.x tree. Also, since you're working on a 64 bit platform I believe that some 64 bit stuff is in 2.9.x. You may want to try that version.

Dave you might want to delete this directory if the version I made is suitable.
