Thank you for your suggestions. It appears that my
lack of expertise with Unix, in spite of having two
books sitting at my desk, is causing me trouble.

I navigate to the home directory with the command $
cd;
I then enter $ sudo pico .bashrc
This opens pico and I insert alias
octave="/usr/local/bin/octave"

I then try to write it and get caught in an endless
loop, i.e.
^O : changes the lines at bottom of screen
File name to write : .bashrc

^T] Changes the heading of the terminal to BROWSER
Dir:/var/root and changes the lines at bottom of
screen
? E R – D M
S G W Spc

Press S (select) or hitting return brings changes the
lines at bottom of screen
A directory is selected, enter it?
Pressing “Y” changes the terminal to one with a
heading of BROWSER Dir: /var below this are a list
of 21 lower case directories including “:”. The
directory root is highlighted and selecting this
changes the bottom of the screen to
A directory is selected, enter it? Pressing “Y”
returns to the BROWSER view.
