mkoctfile error

My saga of trying to port MatLab to Octave continues
to expand.  I am trying to create oct files to serve
the purpose that mex files do in MatLab.  However,
trying to self teach from the manual as well as xxx, I
have tried to do the oregonator file from the manual. 
I get a command line pare and syntax error as seen
below.

octave:2> mkoctfile oregonator.cc
parse error:

  syntax error

>>> mkoctfile oregonator.cc
                                  ^

What am I doing wrong??
