There has been some discussion of the correct way to do this
on the octave-forge mailing list.

Issues are:
   - which toolkit should be used
   - libMagick does not have a stable API
   - is it reasonable to depend on a given toolkit

OTOH, there is definitely interest in improving imread/imwrite.
