It could be a good source for benchmarking code.

Octave came in 5th of 7 programs compared. R came in second and was faster than MATLAB. It looks like the guy did a reasonable job compiling with ATLAS, etc., but he notes that these are Windows benchmarks and Octave's reliance on Cygwin might be hampering its performance. R does not use Cygwin, so this might be helping R, but it must be a lot more work to create a Windows stand-alone that doesn't use Cygwin.
