Malte,
There are two other possibilities:
1) Use DarwinPorts <http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/> or
2) my meta package
<http://www.hmug.org/pub/MacOS_X/BSD/Applications/Science/octave/>

Hi Malte,
I would be please if any one could send me a complete
guidance how to install and run octave on Max OS X 1.4.2
(using X11 ?).
I would suggest first install fink
<http://fink.sourceforge.net/>, then installing Octave.
Fink gives the MacOS user the opportunity to use much of the
quality free software out there. When it is installed, you
can install Octave simply by issuing `apt-get install octave'.
