Thanks for checking this. I assume that you aren't using the Windows version(?) so it may be an issue with Windows vs. Unix IO - line ends and all that. I installed from octave-2.1.73-1-inst.exe from sourceforge. With the 2.1.73 version I am also not able to run directly from the Windows (DOS) command line (I could with 2.1.50a) but have to invoke Octave with "sh -e octave.exe". Probably this has to do with configuration in doing the port to Windows.
