Re: stiff ode with variable step

This is not much help, but I recall the conclusion being
that it was easier to simply "force" the step size to be
uniform using readily available smoothing algorithms.  

For my needs [not ode related], I never got anything to
work very well. Every attempt injected artifacts into the
results.
