Well: you need to use it like in 2 steps:
1. Open file & get file ID.
2. Use file ID to read the string.
fid=fopen("28JUL06G.DAT","r");
fread (fid,Inf,"32*single",0,"ieee-be")
%do whatever
fclose(fid);
