Trees (Nested Cell Array) in Octave.

Hello there,
I am presently using a nested-cell array 
x={1 { 2 3} {4 { 5 6} } }; to represent a
tree structure below.

 -1
  |-2
  |-3
 -|-4
    |-5
    |-6

Is there any other way using(excluding  lists
where you cannot do this ) other Octave constructs?
