To begin with, it puzzles me that the "Stable" version isn't the recommended one. :-) Would you suggest I use the "Testing" version, i.e., 2.1.73? I currently have 2.1.57, and my sysadmin (whom I will have to persuade to do the changes I need) says there are only small differences between the two.
Well, nobody else has responded, so I guess I will. The stable version is not recommended because of its age. The last "testing" versions are quite stable, but it was never labeled stable because it was part of a development branch of the source code. I don't remember all of the things that were added between 2.1.57 and 2.1.73, but as I recall there were a few new features, and quite a lot of bug fixes, particularly in the N-D array support.
