Calling 'colormap hot' first should work. You can put this in your .octaverc file. The default is in %HOMEDRIVE%:%HOMEPATH%/.octavercThis is probably 'C:/Documents and Settings/<username>/.octaverc', but you can type the following from octave to be sure:
[getenv('HOMEDRIVE'),':',getenv('HOMEPATH')] - Paul
