Well I've come up with a solution....sort of. I compiled and installed
Octave 3.2.3 & GraphicsMagick 1.3.7 on a fresh install of Slackware 13.0,
and imread works fine!
Still doesn't explain why it doesn't work in Slack 12.1 so if anyone's
curious to solve it it's still there :-)
