In debian/sid (which is what I'm using), the default gcc is 4.6. Newer
gcc/g++ are more strict, or standard adherent. That may be the reason
why compilation of older code sometimes fails.

I recently compiled octave 3.4.2 and put it under my home directory and
it worked without any glitch. It's quite straightforward and basically just

configure --prefix=$HOME/octave && make && make install

and invoking this user octave by

$HOME/octave/bin/octave

The official debian octave is still available by simply running "octave".
