imread problem

Dear Octave users,
I used to work with 3.2.4, everything was OK. But recently I decided to install a new version (3.4.2). I went through the installation process correctly; the final checking was alright. But now I can use the imread function. Each time I try to use it I receive the following error message :
error: imread: invalid image file: imread: image reading capabilities were d
isabled when Octave was compiled
Does anybody would have an idea to solve this problem ? Or at least, can I come back to the 3.2.4 version ?
I precise that I use Ubuntu 11.4 (linux node 2.6.38.11-generic-pae) and Gnome 2.32.1 with Intel Core i3 CPU
