Thanks, Tatsuro, I tried opening it in a different pdf viewer (I had been
using evince in FC18) and now it shows as a mu.

I am using
  RHEL5
  Evince 0.6.0
  PostScript and PDF File Viewer.
  Using poppler 0.5.4 (cairo)
and \mu does appear to be properly rendered as a lower case
Greek letter mu.
