thanks for replying and I have followed those instructions for the developers
release which I am now using. "GNU Octave 3.7.7+". It's the same UI as the
official release 3.6, which I have compiled and installed.
In 3.7.7+ I have been unable to complete the build due to problems with the
documentation (it seems to me) compilation however. I presume the GUI is
built after those targets in the make file then (I am not so familiar with
the doubly indirect GNU build processes, yet). The documentation built has
been useful to me so far so I didn't try to compile without it. So I guess
there's my issue.
I will disable documentation targetting and rebuild and report back.
