Interesting---I think you may be correct that the number is initially read as a double and only later converted to uint64.
I thought that specifying the number in hex would work around it, but no:

format hex
x = uint64(0x9876543210987654)

x       =         98765432109878 0

What's even stranger that 'format hex' seems to botch printing uint64 numbers by not printing some zeros:

uint64(0x123)
ans =  0 0 0 0 0 0 123

This is in 4.0.3 on F25
