As I tried to show in my last message, the example is different for
Octave 4.2 vs 4.4.

In Octave 4.2, you need to initialize the interpreter with

    string_vector argv (2);
    argv(0) = "embedded";
    argv(1) = "-q";
    octave_main (2, argv.c_str_vec (), 1);

In Octave 4.4, you need to initialize the interpreter with

    octave::interpreter interpreter;
    int status = interpreter.execute ();
