[Help-tar] extracting file

Hallo,

I extract a single file from an about 300 MB tar archive on a Linux machine
using Gnu tar 1.13.17

While the file is found and extracted within several seconds, the tar
programme doesn't finish and return to the command line prompt for over a
minute or more.

Does tar still search through the rest of the archive, although it has
found and extracted the matching file?
Is there any way to tell tar to exit immediatly after it has extracted the
file?
