In response to Gabor's question: Yes, the core was installed:

$ brew install igraph
Error: igraph-0.5.4 already installed
$ python -m igraph.test.__init__
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Resources/Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python:
 No module named igraph.test

However, I ended up resorting (again) to an old *.mpkg installer from Tamas 
(many thanks!) and it seems to work for now.  Not an ideal solution, but I need 
to get past this.
