Its definitly an old version running on the server. Log in and do
"cvs --version". I think it was introduced in 1.11 but i might be
wrong.

delete file before updating. this way you get always a clean copy of
your file.
rm myfilename.txt
cvs update myfilename.txt
works fine for me.
