Problems with file permissions

I'm trying to edit a file in my working copy, but emacs isn't letting me.
The file permissions on the working copy should be okay, and in the
repository I have write access to the directory that it's in, so I'm not
sure what's the problem. I do a cvs diff and there's no changes (so it's not
waiting for a commit). I can get around it by deleting the file and then
doing a cvs update, but obviously that's not ideal ...

I'm sure this is a newbie mistake, but I'd appreciate some help.
