I think this has become the most frequently asked question in this
group. Set the SGID bit (chmod g+s) on all the directories in the
repository. That will cause any new files or directories to inherit the
parent directory's group rather than getting the user's group.

Even if lives DID hang in the balance, it would depend on whose they were.
