They're not called legacy systems for nothing :-) Seriously, most large
corporations still have a ton of COBOL apps. We're in the process of migrating
to Java and open systems, but it'll be a few years (decades?) until everything
gets moved off, and in the meantime you've got maintenance, changes in business
processes, integrating acquisitions, etc. that require changes to those legacy
systems. And changes in a large corporate environment mean some kind of change
management process, including version control. Hence my original question.
