Finally! Someone else who has this issue.  In my case I think it is
because my news server requires authentication.  I get one use of 'g'
and from then on I have to [R]estart or M-g.  I have looked and looked
for something (variable) for this but so far nothing.

Please let me know if either of you find a fix.
