I'm not sure I had unterstood your reply, but this is what I have in my
.emacs:

 '(message-cite-prefix-regexp "\\([     ]*[-_.[:word:]]+>+\\|[ ]*[]>|}:+]\\)+")
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Note that the default value lacks the `:' after `}'.
