Not currently, but it's been requested before.  If you set the levels
for your topics/groups appropriately, you can ask for only levels N and
above to be refreshed.  That may be enough for you.

You want a ~/.authinfo file with contents like this:

machine xyz.com port imaps login tzz password YOURPASS

There's been many posts from GMail users about setting Gnus up with it,
and there are some peculiarities.

If you're running a recent Emacs, look into the EPA library to encrypt
your authinfo file.  If not, you can try the encrypt.el library in Gnus,
but it's going away in favor of EPA so I wouldn't use it.
