After years of using sendmail, I began using smpt-sendmail this week,
mostly without problems. This afternoon, I recieved the same error
message you received, why, I don't know. Being in a hurry, I closed
gnus and emacs, restarted, and smtp-sendmail was working again.
To turn on debugging, "Enter Debugger on Error", a menu command, sorry
I don't know the keyboard command.
