Changing Computers

I've been reading news with gnus for quite a number of years.
Currently I use it on an old desktop running redhat. I just purchased
a macbook. I copied over all the .emacs and .gnus files, plus the
newsrc and newsrc.eld files from my old desktop, and fired up carbon
emacs. Gnus shows all my groups -- but there are '*'s next to the
news groups, instead of the number of unread articles. If I type "="
next to the group it correctly finds only the new articles (I'm using
the same news server, so the article numbers are the same). However,
even after I quit gnus and start it up again it still is in the same
state. It does correctly have all of the ticked articles, so this is
very puzzling. What do I need to do to fix things?

Victor
