This is not the solution you are asking for either, but when I was using
nnrss, I used a cronjob to actually fetch the feeds, and then Gnus would
get the information from the local disk - much more flexible and faster
(user interface-wise).
I believe there is a section in the manual that describes this mode of
operation.
Nowadays I use news.gwene.org for all RSS/Atom feeds.
