To add irony to the matter:
Ring 3 is userspace,
Ring 0 is kernel space.

But some security researcher popularized the idea of negative rings.

Ring -1 would be the virtualization hardware that is taken advantage by
free software like Xen.

Ring -2 would be SMM/SMI (system management mode)

And Ring -3 would be the ME.

So this is not very far fetched. I use to joke a lot about that.

Then at this point it's not hard to rewrite the lord of the rings with
that in mind.

You even have what looks like a GSM tower with a big eye, that knows
the location of people using the ring...
