Current: The mission of the Libre Planet project is to build a global
network of local groups, each of which is working diligently,
professionally, and competently to raise awareness of free software as
an issue of ethics and freedom.
This is a good concise description of what LibrePlanet was established
for, but i'd like to present some other mission statements:
Starbucks: Our mission: to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one
person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.
Google's mission: to organize the world's information and make it
universally accessible and useful.
Microsoft: to help people and businesses throughout the world realize
their full potential
Those are a few corporate examples. Here are a couple from nonprofits:
Kiva: "To connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty."
American Heart Association: "Building healthier lives, free of
cardiovascular diseases and stroke."
I propose that our mission statement be simpler and broader like
these, but that we use something like what we have as a description to
supplement our mission statement. Here's what i propose:
Libreplanet should share the mission statement and slogan with the FSF.
Misison: to further free software for a free society
Slogan: Free as in freedom
I also think the description could use a bit of tweaking as well. The
current one limits the scope to local groups and awareness campaigns
and i think we're about much more than that.
How about: "The LibrePlanet project exists to build a global network
of activists organized around furthering the ideals of software
freedom and related issues concerning digital rights as necessary
means for a free society."
All of these might need some tweaking but let me know if you agree
with the overall idea or not.
