Hi,

So, there's lots and lots of programs that need help, many of which are
super-welcoming to volunteers. My own project Snowdrift.coop has worked
hard (and we want to do more) to make it as easy as possible for
volunteers to start helping us even in little ways. Caring about free
software, you'll appreciate what we're doing. And with a background in
math, you might like Haskell specifically (which we use) because it's a
functional programming language that works more like abstract math
versus traditional imperative languages.

I also think that http://openhatch.org/ does a good job overall at
helping people start coding for projects.

Cheers,
Aaron
