Distros like Fedora and Ubuntu are mostly developed on the lines set
by their respective corporate groups.

I am talking about the nature of local ecosystem of these and similar
communities. The dynamics of development within these groups suggests
that the active developers have accepted the state of affairs.

What may be a possible solution?

I am interested in this too. I don't know what a solution could be but I think I have some contributions to better define the problem (correct me if I'm misinterpreting your concern)

I'd like to suggest this link
https://words.werd.io/what-is-open-source-cfbe3ccd22ea#.58pnrasq0

which I reached through this post
https://words.werd.io/what-is-open-source-cfbe3ccd22ea#.58pnrasq0

And I believe that the problem is more general. It doesn't affect software production or digital infrastructure sustainability

But more generally, content production and information ecology, as suggested here
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jul/12/how-technology-disrupted-the-truth

Also this interesting talk by Dario Taraborelli
( https://twitter.com/ReaderMeter )

tl/tr The Wikimedia Foundation is working on a mechanism to produce "facts" approved by the scientific community against the factoids produced in a ads market fueled skewed incentives environment

I know of a project called Backfeed (backfeed.cc ) that has as a mission a viable mechanism of reward distribution for common good contributions.

Aldo I'm not sure if projects like Ethereum, Counterparty and the such could be related or involved in potential solutions.

"There's no such thing as a free lunch"

Work for commons has to be rewarded with money

Otherwise it won't stand up to its promise of a more just world.

I'm synthetizing brutally, I know, but that is.

Does this help ?

Best
