I wanted to do the release today, but I will at least wait for the
Solaris feedback now.

AC_PROVIDE_IFELSE is not in Autoconf 2.50 (AFAICT it's in 2.52).  I
don't know if we left its usability through other patches already, but
we do still advertise 2.50 compatibility.

Also, this has been fixed properly in branch-2-0 and above.

I have not tested your patch, but would feel the need to do so quite a
bit if I were to put it in.  (I have wondered whether to simply answer
"not strictly a bug", but that would be making it a bit too easy on my
side, I guess.)

So, I'm unsure about this patch.
