another branch-1-5 point release

Yes, I know it hurts 2.0 release when I don't work on it exclusively.
But given the number of regressions, I consider it a service to our
users to provide them with a known-good stable release. I'd like to
push this out in maybe 1-2 weeks (and then concentrate solely on
branch-2-0, ha ha ;-)

Did I forget any regressions or important bugs? (Maybe, if a solution
for the libstdc++ problem can be found quickly enough, I'd prefer it in
as well.)

Meanwhile, here are proposals for HACKING update (HEAD), NEWS update
(branch-1-5), maillist info update (webcvs). Any issues with these?

Cheers,
Ralf
