For the sake of legibility, how about: sflag=`wl=$lt_prog_compiler_wl eval echo " $lt_prog_compiler_static "` LDFLAGS="$LDFLAGS $sflag" This way you avoid the escaping of the quotes and the not-so-obvious concatenation of strings in the LDFLAGS assignment. 'sflag' intentionally kept to a short name so that Thunderbird doesnt wrap the lines above. Kean
