Almost anyone will prefer tabs if they are the only ones working on the source code. The problems occur when several/many people are working on shared source code using a variety of editors.

Can we agree to make the switch only after 2.2.8 though,
I would like to avoid unnecessary churn ATM.

I am in favor of instituting a rule that all new code and patch code should use spaces but that existing TABs can continue to exist until those specific regions of code are edited. The formatting situation is not worse than now (we probably already have mixed spaces and tabs) and eventually the code will entirely use spaces.
