The 'blunder' mentioned above was an intentional optimization for speed.
Going back to the straightforward code costs 0.5% compilation time.
We might never need to compare rationals of such extreme scales that we
need all 64-bits, if we keep examples like the one at the top of this issue
out of our build.
On the other hand, straightforward code is more trustworthy, and might be
worth a 0.5% slowdown
