https://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=4387I'm skeptical, really. While you did find those two examples, to me they seem to be an outcome of the "everything should be in relative notation, and \relative is needed only once at a very outer level" thinking.
And while LilyPond documentation historically propounds this thinking (including its use of the relative=<number> option in lilypond-book), I don't think we are really doing ourselves and our users much of a favor here since it means that you frequently need to fix the octaves at the seams where your music is put together.
