config: too many arguments in dirname

During ./autogen.sh (and configure), I get the following exerpt:

checking for kpsewhich... kpsewhich
checking for tfm path... dirname: too few arguments
Try `dirname --help' for more information.
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/cm
checking for guile-config... guile-config
-----

It doesn't stop the configure, nor does it complain about this problem at the
end of the configure, but this might be a symptom of a problem that might
develop later on.  Just warning people, since this message scrolls by pretty
quickly and it's easy to miss it.
