Basically, there isn't IMHO, but in modern scores if you have numbers
everywhere for time signatures, having C instead of 4/4 as the default
looks funny.  My solution (within the 2.2 series) to globally use 4/4
is this:

  ...
  \paper {
    \context {
      \StaffContext
      \override TimeSignature #'style = #'()
    }
  }
