Yes, but ambit is a perfectly good English word, which can be used to
mean ambitus, and the plural of ambit is ambits. Most English
speakers prefer to make a phonemic distinction between the singular
and plural forms of a word, and the long u/short u distinction isn't
used phonemically in English.
