Hi,
I'd suggest using jedit. It is easy to work with if you ever used an
editor, and with lily4jedit it is a highly integrated tool with a viewer,
a midi player, a wizard to start new pieces, and several nice functions
(for example, it is possible to just mark a few notes with the mouse or
keyboard, and then add staccato to these notes with a mouse click).
