Hi Frédéric.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 too and I tried to compile (after the first
commit, the first compiling)...
And to my great surprise it succeeds!

For info I had the needed packages provided by a "sudo apt-get
build-dep lilypond" command with the only difference that
I used texi2html-1.82 (compiled from sources) instead of 1.78 (in
Ubuntu's repository), as recommended when running ./autogen.sh.
Since your error seems related to pdfetex it may be relevant to add
that I also have texlive-full that is installed on my computer.
