This email seems to have gone missing in the day that the mailing
lists were broken:

In particular, I'm wondering if there's a (significant) difference
between the
s = s.replace("foo", "bar")
method I used, and the
re.compile(... however this works... )
method that the rest of the file uses. No, I don't know how re
works, so thoughts from python people would be nice.
