2a) Lyrics get less space in the new system, but all the
choral-music folk seem to want is a but a touch more padding from
Lyrics to any non-associated grobs on the next staff.
Maybe right, but has anyone really tested all the different forms of
lyrics yet?
There might be no unique best default settings.

The scope of testing is not much more than the list I posted at
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2010-11/msg00111.html
In fact, those tests did not include a case of Lyrics above their affinity
staff. My change (2b) placed a minimum-space rod from the centerline of the
staff to the baseline of Lyrics, which pushes lyrics-above too far away. That
is not good, so I pulled that change out.
I had also forgotten my line endings earlier; these attachments are properly
de-CR-LF-ied.
