I had no specific answer. As my last response was

I am not a developer so do not know the internal workings of the code, 
however the above tracker is a doc bug (and 'doc' is my 'bag') and I 
occasionally revisit this specific issue as I learn more about LilyPond 
just to see if I could make a dent in this specific issue.

When I saw this question from Mark, it reminded me of the above tracker 
and I was hoping a developer might be able to confirm/deny this then we 
could add a new tracker or incorporate this request from mark (at least 
from a doc perspective) into it.

As Han-wen stated back in 2008

I think I counted three out of the many, but it is not clear if these 
are the only 3 or if others need to have considerations too.

But I don't know where the answer Mark's question would be if I were to 
try to hunt this down myself.
