Do you have it installed ?
Try this:
$ locate libfreetype.so
...
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so.6
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so.6.8.1
...
